The core of Green Over Blue are Richard Whiteside and Brian Rust, both of whom love wrestling with songwriting and production. They definitely have a foot in the indie/alternative camp, but also explore influences from Electro Music, African, Latin, Folk, Americana and anything that they feel sounds right.Their songs are narratives that express their hopes, frustrations, questions and desires about the past, the present, and the future. They’re not afraid to wear their hearts on their sleeves and allow a wry sense of humour to pervade their work, in the tradition of other British songsmiths, like: The Smiths, The Beatles, The Kinks, Bowie, Julian Cope, Sting, The Cure.
The duo collaborates with other musicians including Richard’s brother Paul, who contributed guitar, bass, vocals and some inspired production ideas to the first EP and following singles. James Morgan should also be mentioned for his effortlessly superb drum work. Future plans include collaborations with other musicians, perhaps some live work and the continued exploration of different musical avenues.Neither Richard or Brian can pin down the exact moment when they decided to really take music more seriously. I guess they’ve both just been gradually pulled further in this direction by the positive reaction of their friends and peers to their recent releases.
Brian's musical journey started with buying a saxophone, before the lure of guitar and songwriting took over. However his brass section days left him with a love of worldwide funky tunes, from soul and afro, to jump blues, jazz and all sorts of crossover styles. Song writers he admires throws up a diverse crowd including: Tom Waits, Gil Scott Heron, Elvis Costello, Joni Mitchell and Paul Simon to name a few.Richard has also meandered around different instruments including: bass, guitar, drums and keyboards. Early influences on his bass work included: Chic, Sister sledge and Stanley Clarke, while his guitar and production skills have been subliminally infused with inspiration from: The Beatles, Bowie, The Associates, Talk Talk, Brian Eno, Kraftwerk, XTC and The police.
Richard and Brian write songs, both together and solo, but always collaborative on arrangements. Some songs remain close to their original demos, while others head off in all together different paths, as Richard, who handles the majority of recording and production experiments and polishes the rough ideas. While that’s happening Brian can generally be found getting on with the graphic and video work, having worked professionally as a graphic designer.Song inspiration often comes from their local patch, or from places they’ve lived in around London and Brighton, and also from the wider world. Brazil, a country Brian lived in for a few years, has also left its mark on some songs, which as yet remain to be recorded.
